good morning, america. high alert. the terror threat right now, causing a mass closing of many of america's largest embassies around the world. more than a dozen closing their doors this weekend, as officials try to figure out the exact target at this hour. the emotional and dramatic showdown between a victim and her kidnapper. >> after 11 years, i am finally being heard. >> michelle knight's courageous face-off with the monster who held her captive for more than a decade. how she got through it. and how she's moving forward with her life. and the flash flood emergency in the south. a 5-year-old sucked into this drainpipe. lucky to be alive after being washed 300 yards under an entire neighborhood. these camp counselors rescued when this stream became a raging river in just seconds.

dangerous skin rashes. and we also have the letter penned by nfl star aaron hernandez from behind bars. >> that went viral yesterday. but we're going to begin with the threat to american embassies and consulates now in more than a dozen predominantly muslim countries. u.s. officials taking this very seriously, ordering those offices closed on sunday. and abc global affairs correspondent martha raddatz joins us now with more from washington. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, josh. this morning, the u.s. intelligence community is doing everything possible to try and find out exactly what the target is, but the state department is not taking any chances. shutting down embassies across the muslim world. the concern is so great, the threat so specific, that some of america's biggest and most important embassies in the world are closing their doors. from egypt, to iraq, kuwait, bahrain, and afghanistan. every embassy and consulate in muslim countries will be closed on sunday.
7:03 am

whole ordeal stop them from living. josh? >> alex perez, in cleveland. that's so good to hear. we want to bring in now our abc chief legal affairs anchor, dan abrams. michelle knight, the power and the strength to get to that microphone and say what she said was remarkable yesterday, and yet, equally transfixing was this nearly 20-minute-long rather diatribe really from ariel castro. could the judge at any point have stopped that? >> sure. theoretically, he could have. but let's be very careful here. castro has a right to make a statement. and the statement can be about anything that could lead the judge to give him a more lenient sentence. that means he has a lot of leeway. the last thing the court wants is to create an issue on appeal. now, with that said, when he started attacking the victims, could he have stepped in? yeah, he could have. he could have said enough, let's stick to the issues in the case, let's stick to the mitigation questions.
7:08 am
but i think the judge was erring on the side of caution here. >> what happens to castro now? >> so, the first thing that's going to happen, he's going to go to an institution where he's going to be evaluated, as to his level of violence. that will determine which facility he's sent to. as a practical matter, they already know he's being sent to the one that's the most protected. and people are saying, he should be in solitary confinement. he may be in solitary confinement. we know he will be initially. but if he's in solitary confinement for a long time. that's not to punish him. that's to protect him from other inmates. there's going to be concerns for this guy, based on the high-profile nature of this, that he could be a target in prison. now, to the economy. the big jobs report is out this morning. and everyone is looking for signs the economy may be picking up. let's bring in rebecca jarvis. rebecca, what are we expecting this morning from the jobs report?
7:09 am
>> reporter: this is a mixed report. some disappointments. for example, just 162,000 jobs were created in the month of july, the issue there is we would like to see a lot more, more like 200,000, 250,000 would be great. plus the unemployment rate dropped 7.4%. the lowest since 2008. >> but not that we're complaining. i have to ask, why is the market at an all-time high right now? sflr the market is still digesting this information. some of the positives in the economy. manufacturing is improving. home sales and car sales have both been on fire, those things have been driving the stock market forward. we want to see those jobs come back, that's issue number one. >> rebecca jarvis with good economic news. >> thank you. we're going to turn now to the new warning about acetaminophen, the active ingredient in tylenol and so

deported or even jailed, if they violated the new law in the upcoming olympic games in sochi. almost six months away. but this morning, a top lawmaker in russia said that the gay propaganda law will not apply to olympians and guests. our task is to be as politically correct and tolerant as we can be. this morning, the protests have gone global. the actress, tilda swinson releasing this picture of herself in front of the kremlin with a rainbow flag. here at home, they're calling for a boycott of russian vodka and maybe even of the games themselves. an idea that johnny weir says would only hurt athletes. >> the olympics are the athletes' lives, it's our livelihood. >> reporter: it's unclear whether the news this morning about the law not applying to athletes and fans will impact mounting calls for a boycott. and it's worth noting that
7:14 am
russia is now promising to be, quote/unquote, politically correct and tolerant during the games, that probably does not mean they will improve their treatment of gays the rest of the time. that's why we're seeing these ongoing protests. >> dan, you will keep us updated on what's happening there. >> we probably haven't heard the last of it. we want to turn now to paula faris with the other top stories this morning. good morning, paula. we begin with a new picture of the guy being called the most wanted man in the world. take a look at edward snowden. the former nsa contractor, who exposed the u.s. government surveillance programs, grinning as he left moscow's airport, alongside a lawyer for the website wikileaks. now, russia has granted him asylum for one year, infuriating u.s. officials. members of congress from both parties are urging president obama to cancel next month's presidential summit in moscow in protest. and it took five years. but this morning the government is celebrating its first big victory in court in its attempt to hold wall street accountable for the financial crisis.
